“We are not proposing a BMW or a Cadillac. To keep parking, the renovation would include partially building out over the parking lot. The renovation would increase the public space by over 30% by building an addition off the second floor. Commissioners originally voted to financially support an improvement plan as far back as 2014. In September 2020, commissioners v oted to keep the township-supported library at its present location on Darby and Mill Roads and move forward with a $12 million renovation plan to that building after they rejected a proposal to move it to the now demolished Brookline School. Goldsmith said the building in its present state has an antiquated elevator, subpar wiring for state-of-the-art technology, broken toilets, inefficient use of space and inconsistent heat and air conditioning all contributing to high maintenance costs.
